From the impressive naval fleet of the Cholas to the oldest infantry regiment of the Indian Army, Tamil Nadu has been an epicenter of military activities for aeons. The state stands among the few spots outside European nations, and the only in Asia, to witness the first test flight of a biplane by Giacomo D'Angelis in 1910, followed by the establishment of the second private flying club in India, the Madras Flying Club, in the 1930s. Additionally, Tamil Nadu was among the first few states in India to host one of the initial nine pioneering squadrons of the Indian Air Force – Squadron No. 6, based in Tiruchirappalli. Now designated as a defense industrial corridor, Tamil Nadu boasts a thriving military industrial complex supported by Defense Public Sector Units such as Armored Vehicle Nigam Limited, Bharat Electronics Limited, and Munitions India Limited. The upcoming Satellite Launch Centre in Kualsekarapattiman will open up new opportunities for private sector investments in the space domain.
